In summer, Harjumaa is undoubtedly the best place for the holidaymakers without a definite plan of how to spend their holiday, advantages being the closeness to the city and beautiful seashores. There are plenty of opportunities for spending an active holiday and everyone should find something to their taste – a day on the boat, kayaking or yachting at the sea, fishing, scuba diving and wind-surfing. There are lovely small ports, nice hiking trails and there are also plenty of opportunities for horse riding. You could spend a day at the children’s amusement park Vembu-Tembumaa and for golf enthusiasts quality golf courses have been created in Harjumaa.
Harju County is the largest county by population (535,887 inhabitants) and second largest by size with an area of 4333, 13 square kilometres. Harjumaa covers costal region of the Gulf of Finland from the Gulf of Keibu to the Gulf of Eru, with the coastline being 530 km long, of which 165 km is the coastline of the islands. In Harjumaa there are 74 islands, the biggest being Naissaar and the Pakri islands with their beautiful and virgin nature. The county also has approximately one hundred inland bodys of water. The longest river is Keila – 116 km. Flowing down from the limestone cliff the rivers form waterfalls. The highest and the most abundant in water are the 8 m high Jägala waterfall and the 6,1 m high Keila waterfall, the terrace of which is 60-70 cm wide. In places, the limestone bluff is exposed as cliffs reaching up to 30 metres in hight as seen in Rannamõisa and Türisalu.
Harju County has been in the centre of the historic cultural events which is why it is the richest in cultural monuments. For example, the monument for the first Bible translation into Estonian stands here. The first Bible in Estonian was published by Anton Thor Helle and H. Gutsleff in 1739. The oldes and the most outstanding architectual monument is the Padise Monastery in West Harjumaa, which belonged to the Cistercians and was built in the 13th century. The architecture of Harjumaa manors was mainly developing in the 18-19 centuries. There are 33 manor ensembles in Harjumaa which are under state protection. Most well-known of these are Saua, Vääna, Kolga and Riisipere manors.
There are also a large number of karst forms like Kostivere Karst region, where the river goes underground for nearly 2,5 km. Tuhala Witch Well is located in the Tuhala landscape protection area and starts to boil mostly in spring, but the same thing has happened also on New Year’s Eve.
In order to protect nature in Harju County, 27 reservations have been formed. In addition, 17 landscape protection areas have been formed to protect the diverse landscape and wildlife. More than a third of Lahemaa National Park is located on the territory of the county.
